Manage Your Child’s Nearsightedness Early for a Brighter Future

Every parent dreams of seeing their kid grow up and look at the world with wide-eyed wonder. However, myopia can hinder how your child sees the world.

Nearsightedness (myopia) means your child can see up close clearly but struggles to see distances, like the board in a classroom.

While nearsightedness is common, it’s also progressive—meaning it can worsen over time. Managing it early in childhood can help prevent more serious complications in the future.

We can create a personalized management plan focused on your child’s comfort, vision, and eye health. Book your child’s eye exam today.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia results from an elongated eye shape or too steeply curved cornea (front of the eye). Because light needs to travel farther inside the eye to reach the light-sensitive retina, it lands out of focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Distant objects appear blurry because the eye’s elongated shape cannot properly focus the light.

Why Early Myopia Management Matters

Nearsightedness can grow from childhood into early adulthood. Similar to the unexpected growth spurts kids go through, your child’s vision could change in small spurts or big leaps.

The faster myopia develops, the more likely your child might depend on glasses or contact lenses to see things far away, like spotting a friend across the street.

The goal of managing myopia is to slow down the eye’s growth. Starting early can make a big difference by:

  • Preventing nearsightedness from rapidly worsening & the need for stronger prescriptions
  • Reducing the risk of sight-threatening conditions like glaucoma or retinal tears

How We Can Help Control Myopia Progression

Nearsightedness is more than seeing distances out of focus. Your child may feel self-conscious about wearing glasses, act a bit clumsy, or even struggle in school and sports.

We can help make their day-to-day vision clearer and take steps to protect their future. Whether they want to go frames-free for sports or love choosing colorful frames to match their style, we’re here to personalize a plan to meet their needs.

Our eye doctors can share tips on how you can support your child’s eye health at home, including smart screen time management and encouraging more outdoor activities.

Ortho-K Overnight Lenses

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) uses specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses to reshape the cornea overnight. The reshaping effect lasts throughout the day, so your child can enjoy improved clarity without daytime contact lenses or glasses.

MiSight 1-day soft contact lenses use a multifocal design that helps slow myopia progression and sharpen blurry vision. The lenses are daily disposables, so there’s no cleaning routine, making them convenient for busy families.

Atropine Eye Drops

Low-dose atropine eye drops can help effectively slow myopia progression by relaxing the eye’s focusing muscles. The medication causes temporarily blurred vision, so the eye drops are typically administered at bedtime.

Atropine treatment is often combined with other myopia management methods, such as prescription glasses or contact lenses.

Some kids aren’t ready for contact lenses or aren’t comfortable with eye drops. Myopia-control eyeglasses offer an easier option.

Unlike standard single-vision glasses, myopia control lenses have a specially designed lens with multiple corrective zones—like a lens within a lens. The multifocal lens can help slow eye growth and correct blurry vision.
